Press Release – Gun Buyback Program 2018

The Cathedral City Police Department completed a “Gun Buyback Program” for December 2018. The Cathedral City Gun Buyback Program rewarded the voluntary surrender of firearms, while engaging our community towards a common goal of reducing gun violence. The event was created as an anonymous turn-in process in which individuals drove their vehicles up and surrendered their weapons, no questions asked. The serial numbers were checked and the guns will be scheduled for destruction. As of the time of this release, there are over 50 guns that have been turned in. Handguns amounted for almost half of the guns turned in and rifles amounted to the other half. At least two “assault-type” rifles – as classified by the State of California – were turned in.
